Day 6, July 12--Dodi's Alma Maters (1,467 miles)

Started off the day with Ann Sather's phenomenal cinnamon rolls, and a fabulous brunch in Chicago (another "Road Food" wonder). Then we began the Ab Sadeghi-Nejad alma mater tour. We stopped at the University of Chicago and then off to Wisconsin for a walk around Beloit college. A quick drive-by of Madison and it was off to our campsite at Mirror Lake state park in Wisconsin Dells.

After setting up camp (it was much easier this time) we went into town to grab some grub. We chatted for a while with a couple from Rockford, IL (where I might have grown up!) at MooseJaw--we were waiting for our pizza to take and enjoy at our campfire. They aptly asked us why on earth we ended up in Wisconsin Dells...a great question, considering that this place is probably one of the weirdest places I've seen. It is as though they just decided to create a vacation spot out of the middle of nothingness. Casinos, HUGE waterparks, duck tours (of god knows what), you name it. So strange. Our favorite title was the Ho-Chunk casino. Nice.

Our night was plagued, thankfully not by Mosquitos, but by a fire that would not start. We thought we were slick, and had picked up a magnesium fire starter, but that was not useful...it seemed like everything was damp, damp, damp. Thankfully, my hubby and I are too tenacious to give up. An hour and a half later, we'd done it. And it was a killer fire. Success!

PS- a shout-out to Steve Jobs and his handy iPhone...without it, these posts from the middle of nowhere would not be possible!
PPS- the flooding that you see on the farms on the side of the road is really sad--must have been totally devastating for these farmers.
