Day 13, July 19 (3,888 miles)-- Getting Glacial
We left the comforts of our Days Inn in Missoula to go up to Glacier National Park. It was a very easy drive, except for the ridiculous traffic we ran into due to a cherry festival! We got to the park and decided that the most logical step would be to find a campground, and there just happened to be one right next to Bowman Lake! Well, unfortunately, this campground was not off of the one paved road in Glacier. After an hour of gravel road in a cobalt, you'd give up too...so we never found Bowman Lake. Hertz is probably thankful we didn't pursue it any further!
We settled in at Avalanche Creek campground and set off on the "Road to the Sun.". All I have to say is that thank god my mom was not on this trip with us, because this road would have certainly killed her. It winds through the glaciers (although only 26 remain out of the original 150), and on top of worrying about dropping off the face of the cliff, and the cars zooming at you, you are constantly on the watch for furry friends who might decide to dash out in front of you! It was gorgeous though.
Took a hike to St. Mary's falls, and the pictured Virginia falls. This aspect of the park is the most beautiful--the numerous, absolutely crystal-clear streams, rivers, and waterfalls that are everywhere. It is spectacular. And despite the numerous posted warnings, no bears were sighted, only deer and mountain goats (so cute, by the way).
Went to a fabulous dinner at Lake McDonald Lodge, and then called it a day!
Fun fact of the day: huckleberries are native to the alpine areas of Montana, and are unable to be domesticated!
